Fear of Polygons

I was working on a model tonight.  A very old model that I have worked on from time to time since college.  Yes, I have one of those.  Will not be my Mona Lisa but there are a lot of test runs that seem to happen while I am working on it.  I have completed it once, but it was never where I wanted it to be and I got kind of OCD about it.  Since then, I have taken a much different approach to my usual.  Normally I would be very careful and attempt more of an end result early on instead of focusing on my fundamentals from pretty much any art course I ever took.  Flesh it out first and worry about details later.

The model has taken on new form with this methodology.  I have completely shredded it.  Not in a polite, I added an edge loop here, type of way.  I have completely ripped it apart and put lines wherever I felt necessary, then I cleaned up the mess.  I feel like a mobster.  Needless to say the improvement of the model has been quite drastic and I am finally feeling that it is where I want it to be.  The process has been invigorating.  I even had the thought, “Wow!  That looks professional”.

I am very hard on myself.  Just sayin’.

3D Cityscape in After Effects

Found this nifty tutorial for 3D cityscapes in After Effects.  It is short and talks about how to make a cityscape easily without any other software suites.  You can of course take this to any level you like.

This tutorial assumes that you are about an intermediate level.

New Year Blogsolutions

So, its a new year meaning a new me right?  Not so much.  I know my track record so far and that is something I need to take into account for this years resolution.  In the past I have made some really fantastic resolutions.  And I do mean the plural of that.  Every year I will sit down and get overly excited about all the cool things I am going to do this year.

  • I am going to do a creative thing everyday.
  • I am going to redo all my branding (website, cards, blogs, etc)
  • I am going to blog daily.
  • I am going to pay off a credit card(s).
  • I am going to eat super healthy, which soon escalates to:
  • I am going to have a six pack by summer.
  • I am somehow some way going to take over the world.
  • Oh and I am going to do this all at the same time.  Who needs time for life to happen?

I get probably a good week or two on the whole taking over the world thing and get a bit discouraged and resume where I left off before the new year hit.  I’m not looking for a resolution but rather a lifestyle adjustment I will stick to so I can further my goals.  I find this time of year inspiring, so I am going to harness that.

As a household we have set a goal to cook in more and not eat out as much, in turn this will be healthier.  I have also wanted to set something for myself.

WordPress has posted a challenge this year:

The Daily Post at WordPress.com | Post something every day.

There is also a post once a week section if you aren’t able to do it everyday, which is where I am leaning.  Don’t want to over do it.  I also figured out my new resolution.

  • I am going to be awesome.

Everything else will follow with that and blog posts to boot.  If anyone wants to join me on this feel free to comment and post your blog.

AnimSchool: Progress

I have class tomorrow night and also have to set a shot up for a meeting tomorrow.  Definitely haven’t spent enough time on this but I still think it is coming along pretty well!

AnimSchool

So two weeks ago I started a beta program for a new online school that is starting up in January.  I am in the character modeling course with a lot of other really talented people, so the entire experience is pretty fantastic.  It also is getting me back into modeling.  I have been focusing a lot of learning new technologies and working on motion graphics.  So this is a very welcome addition to my life.

This class is only going on for four weeks and I figure this will end up being a GREAT portfolio piece at some point.  I am also coming up on our third meeting this Tuesday and figured I should post some progress.

Week 1:

ABOMINATION!

So this is from week 1.  I probably spent about 2 to 3 hours on it, resizing an old model.  That week had been pretty busy….so…yeah… I swear I have excuses.

Week 2:

ABOMINATION2!

This is where I stand tonight.  I have till Tuesday and this is about another hour or so of work on the model.  A lot of my focus is just get down my shape and then adjusting topology for shape.  As far as edge flow, that is another matter and will come in due time.  The basis is there, which is important and it makes moving forward much easier.

Now to send off an email, read and then to bed.  :D

Flowing

Okay…its been a while.  Just sayin’.  I have been working on a lot of stuff for clients so I haven’t been able to really post anything here, but I do have this lovely video of a RealFlow test I did.  It is stylized water filling up a sphere and it is the first pass.  Yes it looks like gelatin, but it works so test successful!

In other news, I have started going through my Photorealism with Mental Ray course work.  If you would like to take the course, I would recommend heading over to CG Society.org and checking out their workshops.  It is an excellent price for everything that you learn.  I will be posting those updates but I won’t  be saying how I did anything unless it is different from the course.  It wouldn’t be fair to the instructor’s hard work.

New Segment

One of the projects I have been given the chance to work on is a show here in St. Louis called “I Love Jazz.”  Great program and it sports a new segment called “Rising Stars of Jazz.”  The Link is below:

The intro graphics for the RSoJ segment are mine.  Enjoy the show!
